The Magna Carta Project

I. BL, Cotton MS. Claudius D.II, fo.128v

by Dr Sophie Ambler

Preserved in an early fourteenth-century statute book made for the Guildhall of London, this is one of two copies made of the inspeximus sent to the county of Middlesex. Like its fellow (Cambridge, Corpus Christi College, MS. 70, p. 184) it includes the 1265 inspeximus of Magna Carta, dated 14 March, giving only an abbreviated version of the Charter with a note that it represents a reissue of the text of 1225. The witness list in the version preserved in the Cotton Claudius statute book is truncated, ending with Peter de Montfort.

A collated version of the inspeximus can be found in the Feature of the Month for March 1214.
