The Magna Carta Project

VI. Glasgow’s cathedral’s ‘Registrum Vetus’: Aberdeen University Library MS JB 1/3, fos.34v-37v.

by Professor David Carpenter

This copy has a full witness list, ‘giving’ clause and date. Joanna Tucker, who is studying the cartulary and looked at the copy for me, believes that the section of the cartulary in which it appears was probably written between 1223 and 1230. The copy thus indicates that the 1225 Charter was very soon known in Scotland. The scribe who copied Magna Carta was probably responsible for this entry alone. The volume also has Henry I’s Coronation Charter and the Constitutions of Clarendon.
