The Magna Carta Project

V. A cartulary of the abbey of St Augustine’s Canterbury: Lambeth Palace Library MS 1213, fos. 189-94.

by Professor David Carpenter

The copy of the Charter here is found in a cartulary.1 It is in this cartulary, immediately following the Charter, than Nicholas Vincent found the letter discussed in my Magna Carta, p.382.

In chapter 2, the heir or heirs of an earl owe relief ‘de comitatu integro’ rather than for ‘de baronia comitis integra’. The baronial relief is put at 100 marks not £100.
