The Magna Carta Project

XVI. A late thirteenth, early fourteenth-century statute book: BL Harley 79, fos.2-3v.

by Professor David Carpenter

There is the 1225 preamble but with the grant being made to ‘all free men’ rather than all men’. The earl’s relief is ‘de comitatu integro’. The baronial relief is 100 marks. The copy ends with the tax so there is no witness list and no ‘giving’ clause and date. The copy here is followed by the Charter of the Forest (fos.3v-4), likewise without witnesses, ‘giving’ clause or date, but with the promise not to seek anything by which the concessions might be overturned.
