Ioh(ann)es Dei gratia rex Angl(ie) dominus Hybernie dux Norm(annie) Aquitan(ie) et comes Andeg(auie) archiepiscopis, episcopis, abbatibus, com(itibus), baron(ibus), iustic(iis), vicec(omitibus) et omnibus balliuis et fidelibus suis salutem.  Sciatis nos suscepisse in manum et custodiam et protectionem nostram abbatiam et abbatem de Melsa et monachos et fratres ibidem Deo seruientes et omnes res et terras et possessiones eorum sicut nostras, et ideo volumus et firmiter precipimus quod custodiatis et protegatis et manuteneatis abbatiam illam et abbatem et monachos et fratres eiusdem abbatie et omnes res et possessiones suas sicut nostras proprias, ita quod eis vel rebus vel possessionibus suis nullam iniuriam aut molestiam aut grauamen faciatis vel ab aliquo fieri permittatis, et si quis eis vel rebus vel possessionibus vel terris vel hominibus suis in aliquo forisfacere presumpserit, plenariam inde iusticiam eis sine dilatione faciatis, et prohibemus ne ponantur in placitum de aliquo tenementorum suorum donatorum vel venditorum siue inuadiatorum nisi coram nobis vel coram capitali iustic(ia) nostra.  Preterea concessimus et presenti carta confirmauimus quod abbatia de Melsa et abbas et monachi et fratres eiusdem loci sint quieti per totam terram nostram ubicumque venerint de theloneo et pontagio et passagio et pedagio et de omni alia consuetudine et seculari exactione et omnes res sint quiete quas emerint vel vendiderint in nundinis vel mercatibus vel portubus vel  oxitibus (sic) vel transitibus tam per terram quam per aquam in tota potestate nostra de quibus assecurare poterunt quod eas ad usus suos proprios emerint vel vendiderint, et prohibemus ne quis super hoc eos disturbet aut vexet aut eis aliquam iniuriam aut grauamen inde faciat super forisfactura (sic) decem librarum sicut littere patentes et car(ta) R(icardi) regis fratris nostri quas inde habent rationabiliter testantur.  Test(ibus) W(illelmo) com(ite) S(a)r’, R(oberto) com(ite) Leic’, Willelmo de Brahos et aliis (Willelmo de Alben’).  Dat’ per manum Hug(onis) de Well’ apud Vernol’ ix. die Ianuarii anno regni nostri quarto.

Calendar

Notification that the king has granted his protection to Meaux Abbey, its lands and possessions; prohibition against impleading them concerning any of the tenements of their founders, vendors or pledges, except before king or his justiciar; and grant that they may be quit throughout the king’s lands of toll, pontage,  passage, pedage and all custom.
