Endorsed: protectio I(ohannis) reg(is) (s.xiii in); prot(ectio) reg(is) ponatur in chasio de reg(ibus) ... (s.xiv); 2e (?s.xv).  Approx. 162 X 60 + 20mm. 

The King was at Abingdon on 2-3 December, and at Ludgershall in Wiltshire by 4 December (RC, 81-81b).  Apparently not in RC, although cf. RC, 81, and esp. RC, 99b (Abbas et monachi de Beclesden' habent litteras domini r(egis) de simplici protectione patentes).

Ioh(ann)es Dei gratia rex Angl(ie) dominus Hibern(ie) dux Norm(annie) Aquit(anie) et com(es) Andeg(auie) archiepiscopis, episcopis, abbatibus, comitibus, baronibus, iustic(iis), vicecom(itibus) et omnibus baill(iu)is et fidelibus suis salutem.  Sciatis quod nos suscepimus in manum, custodiam et protectionem nostram abbatem et monachos de Betlesden' et omnes res, redditus et poss(essi)ones suas, et ideo vob(is) mandamus et firmiter precipimus quod ipsos abbatem et monachos et omnia sua custodiatis, protegatis, manuteneatis et defendatis sic(ut) nostra d(omi)nica, non inferentes eis vel ab aliquo inferri permittentes molestiam, iniuriam aut grauamen.  Et si quis eis in aliquo forisfecerit, id eis sine dilatione faciatis emendari.  T(este) me ipso apud Bedewind' iii. die Decembr(is).
